A Thousand Suns, Mati Diop, 2013, 45min, Senegal
A Thousand Suns is a moving portrait of Magaye Niang, who played the lead in Djibil Diop Mambéty’s African classic Touki Bouki (1973), but works as a farmer in Senegal today. After a screening of Touki Bouki, Niang recalls his first love, who left the country many years ago. What follows is at once a sensitive personal story and a reflection on Senegal’s history and cinematic heritage. An ingenious mix of fact and fiction, A Thousand Suns was directed by Mati Diop, Djibil Diop Mambéty’s niece, who most recently directed the feature film Atlantics (2019).
