Films with English subtitles

Do you miss watching foreign language films in cinema because you can't follow Swedish subtitles? Are you looking to meet fellow international residents of Stockholm and bond through an interest in film? Then you are in the right place! Welcome to join The Stockholm International Cinema Collective (SICC), a group that arranges showings of foreign language films with English subtitles. The Collective chooses 1-2 screenings per month from Zita's screenings with english subtitles to meet up and discuss the film after the screening for those who want at the cinema bar, Bongo Bar. Join their Facebook group through this link. 

Twice a month Zita screens some of it's current films with English subtitles for our international audience, or for you visiting Stockholm looking for great art house experience. A perfect chance for those of you who haven’t had the possibility to see some of the most critically acclaimed films from around the world that doesn't have english dialogue.
We always aim together with our film distributors bring all the recent films and festival favorites with subtitles in English, but we can't guarantee that we are able to show all titles with english subtitles.

V4 Film Days 21-24 February 

Visegrad Film Days presents extraordinary films from the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia. Four Central Europe countries together form a regional cooperation named Visegrad Group (V4) which was established in 1991.

The Zone of Interest screening 12/2, 21/2 (with SiCC), 27/2

The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.  One of last year's big favorites during the Cannes Film Festival is finally coming to Swedish cinemas.

French Film Festival 13-18 February 

The theme of this year's festival is 'Le temps de l'innocence,' the time of innocence. In the opening film 'L'Innocent,' we meet Abel, who is confronted with the question of what it means to be innocent in the eyes of the law when he becomes involved in his new stepfather's criminal activities. Don't miss the Swedish premiere of this twisted thriller with elements of romantic comedy.

The Boy and the Heron screening 30/1 2024

Already acclaimed as a masterpiece in Japan, Hayao Miyazaki’s new film begins as a simple story of loss and love, and rises to a staggering work of imagination. Coming after the maker of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke announced his retirement, The Boy and the Heron is an especially precious gift, and possibly the final film we will see from one of cinema’s greatest artists.

Fallen leaves screening 14/12 (With SiCC)

The story of two lonely people who meet each other by chance in the Helsinki night and try to find the first, only, and ultimate love of their lives. Their path towards this honourable goal is clouded by the man’s alcoholism, lost phone numbers, not knowing each other’s names or addresses, and life’s general tendency to place obstacles in the way of those seeking their happiness.

This gentle tragicomedy, previously thought to be lost, is the fourth part of Aki Kaurismäki’s working-class trilogy (Shadows in Paradise, Ariel, and The Match Factory).

De Ostyriga screening 6/10  

The year is 1933, and society has very specific expectations of how young women should behave. Seventeen-year-old Maren is wild and unruly, so she is sent to the women's institution on Sprogø to adapt. The stay has the opposite effect.

Close screening 8/6  (With SiCC)

The intense friendship between two thirteen-year old boys Leo and Remi suddenly gets disrupted. Struggling to understand what has happened, Léo approaches Sophie, Rémi's mother. "Close" is a film about friendship and responsibility.

Faced with a future of strict ceremonies and royal duties, Empress Elisabeth of Austria rebels against her public image and comes up with a plan to protect her legacy.

EO, a gray donkey with melancholy eyes, encounters good and bad on his journey through life, experiences joy and pain, and endures the Wheel of Fortune.

Godland screening 16/3

In the late 19th century, a young Danish priest travels to a remote part of Iceland to build a church and photograph its people. But the deeper he goes into the unforgiving landscape, the more he strays from his purpose, his mission and morality.

Broker screening 27/2 & 30/3 (With SiCC)

One rainy night, a baby is left at the baby box facility. Sang-hyun and Dong-soo secretly take it home. However, the next day, So-young unexpectedly returns, looking for her baby Woo-sung. She decides to call the police when she finds out that her boy is missing. The two men’s explanation that they took him to find suitable parents willing to adopt him is hard to believe, but with nowhere left to go, she decides to join their mission to find new parents for her boy.

Holy spider screening 13/2 (With SiCC)

A journalist descends into the dark underbelly of the Iranian holy city of Mashhad as she investigates the serial killings of sex workers by the so called "Spider Killer", who believes he is cleansing the streets of sinners.

From a mountain peak in South Korea, a man plummets to his death. Did he jump, or was he pushed? When detective Hae-joon arrives on the scene, he begins to suspect the dead man's wife Seo-rae. But as he digs deeper into the investigation, he finds himself trapped in a web of deception and desire.

Boy from Heaven screening 24/11, 13/12 (together with SICC)

On the first day back after the summer holidays, the grand imam collapses and dies in front of his students in a prestigious university in Cairo. This marks the start of a ruthless battle for influence to take his place.

Döttrar screening 17/11

Sofia, Hedvig and Maja grew up with grief. They were only 8, 10 and 16 years old when their mother took her own life. In Daughters, we meet the sisters as children and in their early adult years, as they reflect on what it is like to come of age in the aftermath of Trauma.

Final Cut screening 10/11

Things go badly for a small film crew shooting a low budget zombie movie when they are attacked by real zombies. The latest film by Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist). 

Alcarràs (En persikolund i Katalonien) screening 3/11

The life of a family of peach farmers in a small village in Catalonia changes when the owner of their large estate dies and his lifetime heir decides to sell the land, suddenly threatening their livelihood.

Excess will save us screening 26/4

A young film director, returns to her family village after a terrorist alert was triggered. As she films her family members in their power dynamics, she comes to understand that they are more connected to this event than she originally thought. Through the making of a short documentary, she becomes closer to her dad Patrick and her cousin Faustine who share the same dream: leaving the village.

Jane by Charlotte screening 12/4

Charlotte Gainsbourg looks at her mother Jane Birkin in a way she never did, overcoming a sense of reserve. Using a camera lens, they expose themselves to each other, begin to step back, leaving space for a mother-daughter relationship.

Kupé nr 6 screening 14/3  

As a train weaves its way up to the arctic circle, two strangers share a journey that will change their perspective on life.

Clara Sola screening 1/3 

In a remote village in Costa Rica, Clara, a withdrawn 40-year-old woman, experiences a sexual and mystical awakening as she begins a journey to free herself from the repressive religious and social conventions which have dominated her life.

Världens värsta människa screening 12/1 + 27/1 + 3/2

The chronicles of four years in the life of Julie, a young woman who navigates the troubled waters of her love life and struggles to find her career path, leading her to take a realistic look at who she really is.

Lilla mamma screening 26/1 + 2/2

Nelly has just lost her grandmother and is helping her parents clean out her mother's childhood home. She explores the house and the surrounding woods. One day she meets a girl her same age building a treehouse.

Sabaya screening 15/12

Film follows a group into Syria's Al-Hol, a dangerous camp in the Middle East, as they risk their lives to save a women being held by ISIS as abducted sex slaves.

Titane screening 30/11

Following a series of unexplained crimes, a father is reunited with the son who has been missing for 10 years. Titane: A metal highly resistant to heat and corrosion, with high tensile strength alloys.

Himmel över Libanon screening 18/11

In the 1950s, Alice leaves her Swiss homeland for Lebanon. There, the best years of her life are marred by the threat of war.

Summer of 85 screening 1/9

In the summer of 1985 in Normandy, Alexis, a sixteen year old who is haunted by death, goes out to sea. A thunderstorm forms, causing his boat to capsize, but he is rescued by David, who is eighteen years old. After this incident, a tumultuous love affair occurs between the two.

Korean director Bong Joon-ho's dark, satirical, yet funny and very unpredictable family drama won the Golden Palm in Cannes 2019 and has been a big success since it's premiere. Korean dialogue with English subtitles. 

Les miserables (screened 30/1)

A policeman-perspective drama of real class and dignity, the debut feature Les Misérables by Ladj Ly brings nuance to the racial tinderbox of Paris’s impoverished suburbs. Since it's premiere in Cannes 2019, where the film was awarded with a Jury mention, the film is now the official candidate from France to this years Oscars.  

The Farewell (screened 27/2)

Award winner Awkwafina stars in Lulu Wang’s latest acclaimed feature, The Farewell, a fictionalized account of her family’s efforts to shield her grandmother from a grim diagnosis. Mandarin, Japanese, English dialogue with English subtitles.
