In Touki Bouki, a classic of African cinema, director Djibril Diop Mambéty mixes surreal fantasy with naturalistic observation to tell the story of post-independence Senegal. The young lovers Anta and Mory want nothing more than to escape Dakar as they imagine what life would be like in France – but they run into a series of unforeseen obstacles. Filled with sharp wit and humor, the film is a unique experiment with cinematic form and cultural references.

Restored in 2008 by The World Cinema Foundation at Cineteca di Bologna/L’Immagine Ritrovata in association with the family of Djibril Diop Mambéty. Restoration funding provided by Armani, Cartier, Qatar Airways and Qatar Museum Authority.
