On the occasion of Human Rights Day, the Embassy of the Netherlands hosts the premiere screening in Sweden of the documentary Eddy's War, portraying award-winning war photographer Eddy van Wessel at the frontlines in Ukraine, capturing the brutal effects of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

For four seasons, Eddy van Wessel travels along the Ukrainian front lines. As the most acclaimed Dutch war photographer for three decades, he aims to capture the ultimate photo: the image that summarizes the entire conflict, making all the struggles, traumas, and setbacks he has endured worthwhile.

Filmmaker, Emmy Award and BAFTA winner Joost van der Valk (Satudarah – One Blood) shadowed him during this final period, documenting how Van Wessel experiences and captures the war through encounters and interactions with Ukrainians. However, on the other side of the lens, you are not immune to the horrors of war. How do you function as a photographer in the surreal reality of war?
 

The screening is followed by a panel discussion on:
• What risks do journalists face in conflict zones, and how can we help safeguard their access?
• Is it possible to uphold good standards of journalism – such as truthfulness, accuracy and objectivity – when there are conflicting interests and few reliable sources?
• What is the role of journalists in documenting evidence of war crimes for holding perpetrators accountable?

The panel discussion is led by Kersti Forsberg (journalist and former director Fojo Media Institute) and joined Eddy van Wessel, Bengt Norborg (correspondent SVT), Henrik Sjöberg (VP Svenska PEN), and Katarina Carlsson (director RSF Sverige).
